From Special Events Magazine 2004
We are often dismayed when we are part of events that have made no provision for any lighting whatsoever. Hotel ballroom lighting is not considered event lighting by any stretch of the imagination and is never designed as an adequate light source for activity on stage or on the dance floor!
From our point of view, as theatrical show producers and performers, good lighting can make a bad show better and a good show great! Lighting creates a theatrical ambience, mood, and atmosphere that set the tone for the entire event.
If you are a corporate organization working with an event management company, think twice before eliminating event lighting as a way to trim the budget.
For smaller events, appropriate lighting is relatively inexpensive and will significantly improve the quality of the performance. A single follow spot on a platform can change the whole dynamic of your event, while the cost is minimal. Not only does it put the focus on the CEO on stage giving a speech or the performer putting on a stellar show, it enhances the existing backdrop, stage set, and decorations.
If you are an event producer, don’t sacrifice lighting by offering it as an optional item for clients to reduce costs. Include at least some kind of stage lighting to do justice to a good event.
Also, ensure that the lighting matches up to the size of the event. The bigger the event and staging, obviously, the greater the extensiveness of the lighting support needed.
Make your next event an ‘enlightened’ one!
